Atoms Atoms are the smallest particles that still keep the property of the element. Often called the building blocks of matter, atoms make up everything we see, touch, and feel. Inside an atom there are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons give out positive charges, neutrons give out no charges (also called neutral), and electrons give out negative charges. When put near each other, like charges (like proton-proton or electron-electron) repel from each other. Unlike charges have the opposite effect, for when protons are near electrons, they attract. |
