An aurora is the actual name for the northern or southern lights. It happens when charged particles come too close to the earth's surface and interact with atoms, causing the air to glow. This normally happens around the poles. When an aurora happens near the northern hemisphere, it's called the aurora borealis. When an aurora happens near the southern hemisphere, it's called the aurora australis.
