Just some basic information about magnets... A magnet can be made of nickel, iron, or cobalt. You can also make a magnet out of steel, but steel contains iron, so normally it's not included in the things a magnet can be made out of. You can make anything that's not magnetized -- but made out of iron, nickel, or cobalt -- a magnet. All you do is rub the iron, nickel, or cobalt object in one direction on a magnet. That magnetizes the metal and you now can use it to pick up things like paper clips or a nail. A magnetized object has its atoms all aligned in one direction, with all of the atoms' poles pointing the same direction together. ...back   |
